Endowing Medical Education

The soul of Bassett Healthcare, as an honored academic teaching facility, is its medical education program. The Friends of Bassett established the endowment fund to prevent Bassett’s long-honored teaching program from becoming an anachronism due to federal and state cost-cutting initiatives and other national trends targeting medical education subsidies. Interest generated from the endowment supports funding for special medical educational programs and projects that reflect Bassett’s humanistic philosophy of health care.

The Bassett Heart Care Campaign embraced Bassett Healthcare’s mission to educate future generations of medical students and health care professionals. The “Teaching with heart” component of the campaign focused on building the endowment to a realistic $10 million corpus.

As of Dec. 31, 2005, gifts and pledges from Bassett’s medical alumni-at-large, Bassett’s medical staff and other donors enabled the fund to reach over $3.4 million, a growth of 6.25 percent over the last year.
