A good portion of our service area lies in the northernmost part of the Appalachian region, a region defined by higher rates of poverty and challenged by higher levels of obesity and related diseases.
The poverty rate for the region averages about 20 percent, higher than the national average of 15 percent. Public transportation is limited, making it difficult for many of our patients to seek regular medical attention.
Bassett Healthcare Network uses support from the community to build health centers where they are most needed, reducing the distance our patients may have to travel to receive care; develop a network of health centers in schools to provide care conveniently to children; and launch innovative programs like our mobile cancer screening coach, which enables us to reach patients close to home, providing essential cancer-screening services.
